Daniel Gilbert, Clarinet

Clarinetist Daniel Gilbert is Professor of Clarinet at University of Michigan. Previously, he held the position of Second Clarinet in the Cleveland Orchestra from 1995 to 2007. In addition to his teaching position, Dan serves as Principal Clarinet of the chamber orchestra CityMusic Cleveland. In the summers, he serves as clarinet faculty at Brevard Music Festival, Principal Clarinet of Brevard Music Center Orchestra, and Principal Clarinet of Classical Tahoe Festival. An avid chamber musician, Dan collaborates extensively with today’s leading musicians, most notably with his wife, pianist Donna Lee. A native of New York City, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale and both a Master of Music degree and Professional Studies Certificate from The Juilliard School. Prior to joining the Cleveland Orchestra, he was an active freelancer in New York City, appearing regularly with The Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theater, New Jersey Symphony, Solisti New York, Stamford Symphony, and New Haven Symphony, where he played principal clarinet from 1992 to 1995. With the Quintet of the Americas in 1994-1995, Dan toured the United States and was in residence at Northwestern University. As an artist/clinician for the Buffet Group USA and the Vandoren Corporation, Dan has appeared as a recitalist and clinician throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia; his concerts and master classes have received critical acclaim. He plays exclusively on Buffet and Vandoren products.
