Liam DeRosa, Viola
2023 Music on the Hill Scholarship Winner
Violist Liam DeRosa, age 19, was the inaugural first prize winner of Music on the Hill's Scholarship Competition, and is thrilled to be returning to the festival this season. He is a rising second-year undergraduate at the Eastman School of Music, where he studies Viola Performance with Professor Masumi Per Rostad. He previously studied with Michelle LaCourse, Viola Professor and String Department Chair at Boston University. At Eastman, Liam serves as Co-Principal Viola of the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra, and performs chamber music with his string quartet. Passionate about historical performance, Liam performs on Baroque Viola with Eastman's Collegium Musicum and Baroque Chamber Music Ensembles. Originally from Cranston, Rhode Island, Liam is an active freelancer in the Southern New England area, and served as Co-Principal Viola of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra, and participated in the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School's Chamber Music Program, which included performing in masterclasses for the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra's 2023-24 Music Director search. Liam has spent summers at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra, the Ascent International Viola Festival, and the Bowdoin International Music Festival. He will return to Bowdoin this summer, where he will work with Che-Yen Chen.
